Up and over garage doors are one of the most popular garage door solutions available. They are simple to operate and come in a huge range of designs and colours, so it’s easy to find a style to fully complement the look and theme of your home.
Up and over garage doors come in two distinct types: canopy and retractable.
Canopy up and over garage doors
Canopy up and over garage doors are the simplest form; they provide maximum drive-through width and protrude forwards from their frame when fully open – creating a canopy at the front of the opening. Canopy up and overs use torsion springs above the door panel, to make the manual operation of the door feel effortless, and can be converted to automatic operation if desired.
Retractable up and over garage doors
Retractable up and over garage doors have become more common in the UK. Unlike canopy up and overs, these doors retract fully inside the garage when opened. Retractable up and over doors are suited very well to automatic opening, and the tension springs of the retractable mechanism allow for greater loads to be supported – so wider doors can be more easily accommodated than with canopy up and overs. Drive-through width is reduced with retractable up and overs, due to the lifting arms protruding inwards, so you should take that into consideration when choosing which style will suit you the best.
